Quick: Senna's personal 911 is up for auction

A 1987 Porsche 911 is fetching bids over a million dollaridoos, and it's not because of its performance figures. The value here is entirely in the ownership history.

This example, a Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet, was F1 legend Ayrton Senna's personal car, used during his off-seasons in Portugal – a release valve from the high-pressure world of grand prix racing and developing Japanese supercars.

A simple, engaging driver's car with a naturally aspirated flat-six and a manual gearbox was the perfect antidote to a season spent chasing championships.

This context – not so much the car's relatively modest 162kW output – is what drives its current auction price of $1.2 million AUD, with 39 hours left on the clock.

The car itself does has an interesting post-Senna history, though.

After his ownership, it was modified with a widebody kit and a different colour before a recent, comprehensive restoration returned it to its factory Silver Metallic specification on 16-inch Fuchs wheels.

So, no, it hasn't simply been immaculately cared for since leaving his hands.

With just over 74,000km on the clock, its astronomical price is validated by extensive documentation and, most importantly, Senna's actual signature on the driver’s seat.

As you'd expect, these hopeful buyers aren't bidding on just any classic 911; they're reaching for a documented piece of motorsport history.

I can’t afford this Porsche surfboard any more than I can afford a Porsche
True story: When I was a kid, I’d often buy surf mags and keep up with the culture almost religiously – despite being deathly afraid of the sea and knowing I’d never take up surfing 😂
