I can't afford this Porsche surfboard any more than I can afford a Porsche

True story: When I was a kid, I'd often buy surf mags and keep up with the culture almost religiously – despite being deathly afraid of the sea and knowing I'd never take up surfing 😂
I can't afford this Porsche surfboard any more than I can afford a Porsche
$4500 and she's yours. The board, that is. Good luck finding an RS!

I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford another Porsche, let alone anything cooler than the 944 Turbo I regret selling every damn day, but I probably wouldn't be helping my cause if I shelled out five grand on this rad Carrera surfboard.

Especially since I can't surf...

Porsche is back for a second paddle with California's Almond Surfboards, and this time they’ve chosen one of the brand's most sacred models as inspiration: the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

While a car-branded surfboard can easily stray into tacky territory, this collection works because it’s grounded in a genuine moment in time.

Back in the early '70s, as Porsche was creating the first-ever "RS" model and pushing the boundaries of lightweight performance, surfboard shapers in Southern California were undergoing a similar revolution, shifting their focus from cruising planks to performance-oriented boards.

The centrepiece of this collab is a beautiful six-foot winged swallowtail surfboard, limited to just 72 examples, one for each year of the car’s debut.

Handcrafted in California, each board uses the same Grand Prix White paint as the original RS, with accent stripes available in the correct red, blue, or green.

Of course, it's all in the details. The details! Iconic and classic Carrera lettering is the immediately eye catcher, followed by the Porsche crest and a ‘72’ racing number.

The mount cleverest touch is the colour-matched single fin on the underside, designed to subtly reference the car’s iconic Fuchsfelge wheels. It’s a thoughtfully executed piece of design that’s clearly more than just a branding exercise.

The rest of the collection is built around the mantra "Single Fins & Air Cooled Engines," a slogan that'll resonate with the target audience.

The range includes the expected tees, caps and boardshorts, alongside a standout pigment-dyed sweatshirt with hand-stitched felt lettering.

For the dedicated, there are even canvas pennant flags paying tribute to Porsche’s Zuffenhausen factory and Weissach development centre.

Tell 'em how much

If you’ve got a spare $4500 AUD ($3K USD) and a 6-8 week lead time, the board can be made to order through Porsche's online shop and select Porsche Centres.

Given the limited run and the success of the last collaboration, they’ll likely sell out fast. It’s an expensive object, no question, but as a piece of sculpture that honours one of the greatest 911s ever made, it almost makes sense.

Even for those of us who’d probably just hang it on the wall. (Yes I'm admitting I would order one if I were cursed with wealth.)

There's always this $100 tote bag, though...

Go read about the RS

But be sure to come back, won't ya.
