Lexus Sport Concept inches closer to reality at Monterey

They've dropped Electrified from the name, but there's no mistaking it: this is our latest look at the EV halo car we've been promised.
Lexus Sport Concept inches closer to reality at Monterey

Lexus has used the Monterey Car Week event to unveil a new take on its Electrified Sports Concept, first revealed way back in 2021.

This new one – interestingly named just Sport Concept, dropping any reference to electric power – pulls the themes of the earlier show car closer to a production-ready look, but there's still no word on whether this is what we'll see when it does eventually hit showrooms.

Thankfully the proportions are still classic long-bonnet grand tourer, but the details look far more resolved.

As before, the Lexus spindle grille has been left behind for a more aggressive nose with slick integrated headlights.

(They might argue, though, that there's still a telling hint of it in the lines of the front air dam and the sharp leading edge of the body.)

You can see hints of the old LFA supercar in the intakes behind the doors, along with the hooked line running from the B-pillar down to the rear deck.

The final LFA themes that I can see are in the rear corners, with large vents, forming a very familiar triangular shape as they lead up to the tail lamps.

If you plonked a huge trio of pipe tips in the centre of the diffuser, it’d scream LFA MkII. Alas, there’ll likely be no screaming from this one, given its electric drive system.

There are still no official technical details for it, but Toyota has previously said it’s targeting a 0-100km/h time in low two-second range.

Lexus's boss has previously mentioned carrying the spirit of the V10 LFA into the electric age, even teasing a simulated manual transmission.

That sounds a bit gimmicky, but it shows they understand the need for driver involvement in the experience.

Regardless, I’m sold. This thing looks horn. If the production car looks anything like this, it’ll be a serious halo model for them.
