Cupra's Leon V is $40K drive-away until end of September whaaat

It's easy to wonder what the hell VW's up to by offering three brands in Australia – Volkswagen, Skoda and Cupra – that all seem to play in the same segment, but if you squint, there's just enough room for them.
Especially when, perhaps for reasons of having too much stock on hand before the update arrives, they're letting MY24 (pre-facelift) versions of the sweet Leon V hatch go for $40K drive-away until the end of September.
Considering the Leon V sat at $49K drive-away only a year ago, this is a pretty handsome deal. And, as my old teammate JWo points out here, that makes the assassin a touch cheaper than an entry-level VW Golf and a number of rivals out of Japan and Korea.

For the spend, you get a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four sending 140kW and 320Nm to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto.
That means it's only a 'warm' hatch by modern standards, but it's a shitload cheaper than the flagship performance hatches out there and still plenty of fun.
If you're happy to spend up, there are more powerful Leon variants like the $54K 180kW/370Nm VZ, $62K 180kW/400Nm VZe PHEV and 221kW/400Nm VZx hero (also $62K) – but that is indeed a much bigger spend that I'm a little less drawn to, novated leases aside.
It's not a perfect car and this is absolutely not an ad – but it's a damn good car at the current asking price. Rob Margeit has a solid review below, and I'd say he's bang on the money with that 7.7/10 score at the original asking price.
